I have people ask me if it’s safe to commute by bicycle, from an air quality standpoint. I say that it’s a good practice to limit your exposure to traffic exhaust, which is highest during am/pm commute periods near heavily-congested intersections. Flexing your commute time/work start time to beat the peak commute periods is good for many reasons, however, the amount of time you wait at an intersection around here is usually about 1 minute. Most of our air quality days fall in the good (80%) or moderate (20%) with an occasional “unhealthy for sensitive groups” day. If we were to have high moderate-to-unhealthy air quality days, we’d caution folks to limit strenuous outdoor activity….
